In Rotterdam, an Apartement Block Bends over a Market
It’s been called a cathedral, the Sistine Chapel of fresh food and even the best market in the world, but if you go inside, it is mostly a surreal explosion of fruit, vegetables and flowers. Tree-sized sunflowers sit next to four storey-high sugar snaps; grapes, broccoli and avocados – all mega sized, colourful, lush and overwhelming, and often leads to congestion at the building’s entrances. People look up in awe and stop walking, then raise their phones for a snapshot. The visitors realize that the hall is covered by an arch of 228 apartments that bend over the food market in a mind-blowing gesture of defence.
