Description
Investment properties proliferated in the 19th century in response to the growing middle class and intense speculation. The maison à loyer with apartments for rent or sale was bank-rolled primarily by private investors out to seduce the new bourgeoisie with housing better suited to its needs than the earlier hôtel particulier. As in this case, apartments are double aspect, with a living room and dining room as the sole reception rooms and a second bedroom giving onto the inner courtyard. Elevators and recessed terraces ennoble the upper floors. A separate stairwell assures direct access to each apartment as well as to the chambres de bonne under the eaves.
