Description
Originally I named my design for Beijing-lmage, the “Beijing Dragon”. It attempts to integrate different aspects of tradition, space, progress, the typical orientation of buildings towards the south and towards and inner courtyard into a form with a certain strength and symbolism. The figure of the dragon alternates its orientation between the inner residential courtyards and wide-open gardens. Every building is involved with each of these types of spaces. The apartments on the south side of the courtyards are four to five stories high. Those on the north side range from seven to eleven stories. In this manner the buildings reflect different scales and spatial situations. A two-story diagonal arcade, which connects all the sections, completes the entire complex. A continuous dark red base and various bold colours in the higher stories accent and give the single “houses” an identity.
